Wider than

Twelve practices for waking the senses to a living world.

Most of us were not taught to live in a world that is alive.

We were taught to manage it. To measure it, schedule it, optimise it, scroll past it. We learned to treat the ground as floor, the rain as inconvenience, the other animals as scenery, and our own grief as a malfunction to be medicated away. And then we wonder why we feel so alone in a world that is, in fact, crowded with kin.

This book is not about adding one more thing to your life. It is about subtracting the noise long enough to notice what was here the whole time. The owl at 3am. The water that remembers. The fire that loosens the tongue. The prayer you have been afraid to pray.

Twelve practices. Both hands in the soil, eyes on the stars. No bypassing, no spiritual shopping, no urgency. Just the slow, clear-eyed work of coming home to your own senses, which is, I have come to believe, one of the most quietly radical things a person can do in a world coming apart.

WHAT IS INSIDE

 Three movements. Twelve practices.

The practices move the way a life does. Down into relationship, down into the dark, and back out toward the world with something to give. You can begin anywhere. Most people begin at the beginning.

Movement One

Coming Back into Relationship

the gentlest of the doorways
01
Walking as Ceremony
Letting the ground lead, instead of the schedule.
02
Dreaming with the Land
The other half of being alive, and how to listen to it.
03
Fire Tending
The first technology, and the one that still loosens the tongue.
04
Water Reading
Learning to read the land’s own memory.
Movement Two

The Hard Ground

the descent, where the turning happens
05
Sitting with Grief in the Living World
Why your sorrow is not a disorder, and what to do with it.
06
Shadow Work on the Land
Meeting the parts of you that went underground.
07
Ceremony Making for Beginners
You do not need anyone’s permission. You never did.
08
The Fast and the Vigil
Staying, when everything in you wants to leave.
Movement Three

Turning Back Toward the World

the going-forth, what the descent was for
09
Creating a Hearth Circle
The work you cannot do alone, and how to gather it.
10
Living in the Wheel
Circular time, in a world that only knows the straight line.
11
Sacred Reciprocity as Daily Life
Taking the gift off the altar and into the kitchen.
12
The Prayer You Are Afraid to Pray
The one that costs everything. The one that was always yours.

This is for you if…
  • You feel the world is alive and have nowhere to put that knowing.

  • You are done with spiritual bypassing and want both hands in the soil.

  • You carry grief for the world and suspect it is not a flaw but a signal.

  • You want practice, not theory. Something to do tonight, on real ground.

  • You are tired of being sold urgency, and want a quieter, older way.

It is probably not for you if…
  • You want a quick fix or a manifestation hack.

  • You would rather read about the work than actually do it.

  • You want guarantees, certainty, and tidy answers.

  • The words grief, dark, and descent make you want to close the tab. Some of this goes down into tender places, on purpose.

No funnels. No countdowns. No false urgency.

The empire already sells you enough panic. I will not add to it. There is no fake deadline on this page, no timer ticking down, no scarcity invented to rush your hand. The book will be here tomorrow, and next season, when you are ready.

The writing is the medicine, and it is meant as a gift. The practices are real, drawn from over twenty years of animist work, Andean and Norse lineages, and one farm in Burgundy where the bees and the fog and the 3am owl keep teaching me things. If it is for you, you will feel it. If it is not, that is its own kind of clarity, and you owe me nothing.

WHO IS WRITING TO YOU

I raised forty million dollars in the corporate world, and then I walked away from it. I am a trained veterinarian and a medicine man, French-born, Andean and Norse trained, schooled at Harvard and in ceremony on the shores of Lake Titicaca. For twenty years I tended a sanctuary in the Catskills. Now I live at La Ferme du Cerf Bleu, an eighteenth-century farm in Burgundy, rewilding twenty acres, keeping bees, and writing to some fifteen thousand people each week.

I have walked the trail this book describes, and come back with mud on my boots. That is the only authority I trust, in myself or anyone else.
